The West Indian Tribal Society

The West Indian Tribal Society is an indigenous religious institution duly constituted in Jamaica. It is the only fully recognized and accredited Jamaican Maroon religious institution. The West Indian Tribal Society is governed by a charter and constitution and protected by the laws of Jamaica and international conventions such as the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, I.L.O. Convention No. 169 etc.

The West Indian Tribal Society is an indigenous religious institution duly constituted in Jamaica. It is the only fully recognized and accredited Jamaican Maroon religious institution. The West Indian Tribal Society is governed by a charter and constitution and protected by the laws of Jamaica and international conventions such as the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, I.L.O. Convention No. 169 etc.

The West Indian Tribal Society is a duly constituted indigenous tribal institution governed by its 1661 charter and religious constitution ratified in 2021 and logged at the Island Record's Office in Jamaica. 

Section 13(3)(b) of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms (The Jamaican Constitution) enshrines and protects the right to freedom of thought, conscience, belief and observance of political doctrines while Section 17 of the said Charter enshrines and protects the Right to Freedom of Religion with Section 13(3)(i) specifically protecting the right to Freedom from Discrimination on the grounds of (i)being male or female; (ii) race, place of origin, social class, colour, religion or political opinions in the exercise of these rights.

Section 33 of the Offences Against The Person Act criminalizes Genocide as an indictable offence punishable by imprisonment with or without hard labour. Subsection 2 defines genocide as : any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, any national, ethnical, racial or religious group, and includes: (a) killing members of the group; (b) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Section 34 of the Offences Against The Person Act states that "...whosoever shall, by threats or force, obstruct or prevent, or endeavour to obstruct and prevent, any clergy- man or other minister...or offer any violence to, or shall, upon any civil process, or under the pretence of executing any civil process, arrest any clergyman or other minister who is engaged in or to the knowledge of the offender is about to engage in, any of the rites or duties in this section aforesaid, or who, to the knowledge of the offender, shall be going to perform the same or returning from the performance thereof" commits an offence and shall be liable to be imprisoned with or without hard labour.
